Kalah

Kalah is a turn-based strategy contest rooted in ancient Mancala traditions. Two players face off across a wooden board with twelve small pits and two larger scoring bowls. On your turn, you lift all the seeds from one of your own pits and distribute them one by one into the pits that follow, looping around the board. The twist: landing your final seed in your own scoring bowl earns you another turn, and dropping it into an empty pit on your side lets you claim that seed plus everything across from it in your opponent's territory. The rules are easy to grasp, but every move opens up branching possibilities that reward careful planning and quick adaptation. There is no luck involved, only foresight and the willingness to sacrifice short-term gains for a stronger position later. Whether you have five minutes or an hour, each match unfolds as a fresh puzzle where the board state changes completely with every single decision you make.

What is Kalah

A timeless two-player board game where you sow seeds and steal your rival's stash. Outthink your opponent with simple moves and clever traps.

How to Play

On your turn, select one of your six pits and sow its seeds counterclockwise, placing one in each following pit. Capture seeds by landing on your empty pit or by racking up points in your scoring bowl.

Tips for Playing

  • Count ahead two or three turns before committing to a move.
  • Focus on emptying your rightmost pits to trigger extra turns frequently.
  • Watch for opportunities to capture large clusters from the opposite side.
  • Avoid leaving your scoring bowl empty when your opponent has a clear path to it.
  • Sometimes giving up a few seeds early sets up a devastating chain later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my last seed lands in my own scoring bowl?

You get an extra turn, allowing you to keep sowing immediately. This is a key way to build momentum.

Can I sow seeds into my opponent's scoring bowl?

No, only your own scoring bowl collects seeds; your opponent's is skipped during sowing.

How do I capture seeds from the other side?

If your final seed lands in an empty pit on your side, you take that seed plus all seeds in the pit directly opposite.

What is the goal of the game?

The goal is to end with more seeds in your scoring bowl than your opponent after all pits are empty.

Is there a way to win outright in the middle of the game?

If one side clears all six pits, the game ends immediately, and the remaining seeds go to the player who still has seeds.

Can I choose any pit on my turn?

Yes, but you can only pick from your own six pits, and the pit must contain at least one seed.
